To Be What Is

A collection of short stories and poems by Katelyn Foley

Introduction: The Question

In general, writers want to bring something unique to the literary table which is already filled with hundreds of thousands---dare I say millions--of voices. Each author wishes to create their own voice through the beautiful pieces they create.

For me, this voice takes the shape of my own and the voices of the world.

In this online writing portfolio, I have compiled a group of works circling around one quote

"Man is the only creature that refuses to be what he is." --Albert Camus

and have given it a new direction. If Camus questioned the reality of self-knowledge, I'm sure he would have been interested in the different ways we realize the self.

In this writing experiment, I have taken these works questioning the masks we make and created different versions of media to match these questions. We are what we learn, and we learn in different ways.

To explore this idea, I have created three different versions of each work:

  1.  The Online Text: This is the piece of work as written online with hyperlinks that will direct the reader to different thoughts I might have had while writing this piece.
  2. The Audio: These are audio files represent interpretations of the text with the nuances of each person's voice. As of now I only have my voice. However, I hope to have more vocal choices in the future.
  3. The Written Text: With each piece begins a written draft, at least for me. These are my pretty scrawling marks of each piece, scanned into the computer. Each piece has its own feeling and style.

With each version comes different interpretations.

Enjoy!
